Paradoxical effect of vagus nerve stimulation on heart rate in dogs.

چکیده
In the anesthetized, open-chest dog, electrical stimulation of the cardiac ends of the transected cervical vagus nerves produced effects on heart rate and A-V transmission that were dependent upon the P-St interval, i.e., the time from the beginning of the P wave to the beginning of the stimulus. When one vagal stimulus was delivered per cardiac cycle, the pacemaker response curve (curve of the P-P interval as a function of the P-St interval) was sinusoidal in configuration, with a maximum at a P-St interval of 135 msec and a minimum at 349 msec. The mean P-P interval was 568 msec, and the mean amplitude of the pacemaker response curve was 58 msec. In any given experiment, the range of P-P intervals encompassed by the pacemaker response curve defined a range of frequencies over which S-A nodal rhythm became synchronized with the activity in the vagus nerves. Over such a range, increases in the frequency of vagal stimulation evoked paradoxical increases in heart rate. On either side of this range of synchronization, vagal stimulation elicited pronounced rhythmic oscillations of P-P and P-R intervals. The frequency of such oscillations was equal to the difference between the vagal stimulation frequency and the mean heart rate. The oscillations in P-R interval were approximately 180° out of phase with the oscillations in P-P interval. ADDITIONAL

On the Differences in the Effects of Stimulation of the Two Vagus Nerves on Rate and Conduction of the Dog's Heart
IT MAY BE CONCLUDED FROM THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THESE EXPERIMENTS : 1. That stimulation of the right vagus nerve in the dog usually causes arrest of all the chambers of the heart. 2. That stimulation of the left vagus nerve exerts a moderate negative chronotropic effect on the auricles. 3. That stimulation of the left vagus nerve has a profound effect on the conduction of impulses over the aur...
متن کاملThe effects of halothane on the interactions between myocardial contractility, aortic impedance, and left ventricular performance. IV. Haemodynamic responses to vagus nerve stimulation.
The effects of electrical stimulation of the vagus nerves have been studied in anaesthetized dogs, before and after bilateral interruption of the cardiac sympathetic nerves. During constant heart rates, maintained by right atrial pacing, vagus nerve stimulation caused small but significant reductions of myocardial contractility, but these were minor compared with the effects of other negative i...
متن کاملProtective effects of an interaction between vagus nerve and melatonin on gastric ischemia/reperfusion: the role of oxidative stress
Objectives:Vagal pathways in gastrointestinal tract are the most important pathways that regulate ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). Gastrointestinal tract is one of the important sources of melatonin production. The aim of this study was to investigate probable protective effect of the interaction between vagus nerve and melatonin after I/R. Materials and methods:This study was performed in male rat...
متن کاملModulation of heart rate by temporally patterned vagus nerve stimulation in the anesthetized dog.
Despite current knowledge of the myriad physiological effects of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in various mammalian species (including humans), the impact of varying stimulation parameters on nerve recruitment and physiological responses is not well understood. We investigated nerve recruitment, cardiovascular responses, and skeletal muscle responses to different temporal patterns of VNS across...
